Birdwatchers flock to Roswell

Birdwatchers have been flocking to Roswell Pit over the past week to see a couple of great white egrets. The birds, which have gradually been shifting their distribution northwards across Europe over the past 20 years, are very rarely seen in Britain but have spent the past week roosting on trees opposite the Sailing Club, near the entrance to the river. The best time to look for them is before 6.30 in the morning, and after 5.30 in the evening. A very exciting first for the new SSSI! (photo copyright: Ben Green)
