Wildspace autumn spectacular

Please come and join us for two exciting events in one day: the Ely Wildspace Bird Race followed by a work party on Ely Common. Starting at 7.30am at the top of Kiln Lane (the road leading to the Environment Agency off Prickwillow Road) we’ll be running the fourth Ely Wildspace Bird Race, where expert birdwatchers will lead teams around the Wildspace trying to see and hear as many birds as they can. With luck we’ll find some unusual migrants as well as overwintering birds to add to the astonishing total of 81 species recorded in last May’s Race. At around 11am the teams will meet up to compare notes and discover the winners! The event is free, everyone is welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. Please bring binoculars (if you have them), warm and waterproof clothing, and plenty of food and drink.

Then – after some hot food provided by the organisers – we’re running a work party on Ely Common. As part of our long-term project with ECDC and the Wildlife Trust to restore the meadows there, we’ll be raking-up recently-cut vegetation and preparing the ground so Trust officers can sow seed from Chettisham Meadow before the winter sets in. Please bring along rakes (heavy-duty ones if possible), gloves, and warm and waterproof clothing. If you can come to this but not the Bird Race please join us at the top of Kiln Lane any time from noon.

To help with catering please email lcpre@elywildspace.org.uk if you would like food, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries.
