Ely Wildspace is fortunate to own a 1¼ ha wood near the Ely Sailing Club pit, within the Ely Pits and Meadows SSSI. Several years ago volunteers (with the consent of Natural England) cleared two plots of small trees and undergrowth, and planted shrubs to try to create habitat that might be suitable for nightingales to breed in.
These areas are being kept free of encroaching brambles and ruderal vegetation, and the development of dense shrub growth is being encouraged. To contribute to this aim, this autumn our volunteers have held two management sessions, when we cut back brambles, trimmed some of the planted shrubs, coppiced a number of small trees, and planted more shrubs.
This work is ongoing, and more sessions will be held during the winter months. Any who is interested in joining our team of volunteers, please in the first instance contact the Ely Wildspace secretary on firstname.lastname@example.org.
